The Atlas in values

Threatened species in each 10x10 UTM square

The map shows the number of species included in any of the three IUCN categories for threatened species (critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable, see Methodology) recorded in each 10x10 UTM square. Threatened species are mostly concentrated in squares that contain wetlands (Ebro and Llobregat deltas and Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà) or steppes (Lleida plains). It is also noticeable that many squares in the Pyrenees and the Lleida pre-Pyrenees harbour a remarkable number of threatened species.

New breeding species

In this atlas there are 21 species with probable or confirmed evidence of breeding which were not confirmed as breeding in the previous atlas. This value does not include any of the species that occasionally bred during the 1999-2002 period or any released cage birds (Monk Parakeet and the Common Waxbill, for example). In other cases, new breeding species such as the Greater Flamingo or the Glossy Ibis have colonised spontaneously. The Collared Dove was mentioned from one locality in the previous atlas and therefore is not considered a new breeder, although its expansion during the period between atlases was huge. On the other hand, although the Cormorant and the Black Tern were included in the previous atlas and not in the main body of the present atlas, these species cannot be considered as extinct regular breeders. Therefore, there is no evidence to suggest that any regular breeder in Catalonia became extinct in the period between atlases, even if today some species are in a critical situation.
